Fortnite World Cup 2019 finale took place in Arthur Ashe Stadium. It is a tennis stadium at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York City. The stadium was filled with Fortnite fans. There was Fortnite lobby music playing while entering the stadium. The entire atmosphere was like a big festival. Tickets to attend the weekend event cost $50 to $150.
Developer Epic Games successfully managed to put the biggest Fortnite World Championship this previous weekend. In Arthur Ashe Stadium, Fortnite fans had the chance to watch the best players in the world compete against each other. There was a share of a whopping $30 Million prize pool!

There was a $10 million (£7,739,900) prize pool up for grabs in the open qualifiers, with $1 million (£744,070) given out per week. The top 100 solo players and top 50 duos who reached the Finals were competing for their share of a $30 million (£23,219,700 million) pool. Each Finals competitor is guaranteed at least $50,000 (£38,706) and the top prize is a hefty $3 million (£2,322,240)!

‘Bugha’ won the first prize of $3 Million in the solo player championship. He finished the tournament with 59 points. He said he is going to buy a new desk with that money for the gaming setup and his trophy!
16-year-old US teenager Kyle Giersdorf from Pennsylvania plays Fortnite as “Bugha’. He was playing the Fortnite game for 2 years. In the Fortnite World Cup, he beat out 99 other players. He played a total of 6 games, each lasting about 23 minutes.
Kyle Giersdorf said in an interview, “I definitely went into the competition aiming for at least top 20, but after that big first game I definitely thought I could win!” He said he is playing the Fortnite game for 2 years. His father, Glenn Giersdorf introduced Kyle to the game.
Fortnite is the only game Kyle Giersdorf plays very competitively. He started playing with his friends and he found it’s pretty fun. Now he plays it every day, 6 to 8 hours in his room.
Kyle said in his interview that he definitely wants to save the money and invest it toward his future. His first plan is to buy a new desk with that money.
Kyle said he knew the other top players in the competition but didn’t talk to them frequently. His usual training process includes warming up his hands, calling friends to discuss techniques to improve, watching videos of the game, and competing in scrimmages.
Harrison Chang, 24 from Orange County, California, plays as “Psalm” player name, got the second prize with 33 points, and won $1.8 million. He was running around excitedly for 10 minutes! He became a full-time gamer in 2016 when he dropped out of the University of California, Los Angeles. In total, he has 19 years of gaming experience.
How much does Bugha lose from his $3 million Fortnite World Cup prize money to tax?
Currently, New York charges an 8.82% tax on prizes. It means Bugha owes the state around $264,600 just for competing and winning. There are also other taxes in the US, where despite his young age, he has to stump up the cash to pay the 39.4% amount of the US’ top tax bracket. Calculating all possibilities, he will still get more than $1,500,000 with him at the age of 16!!

Sentinel was Kyle’s management company. They said the $3M price was the largest individual prize in the history of e-sport.
There are a handful of professional gamers who won the bigger prize than Kyle. According to reports, DOTA 2 player, Kuro Salehi Takhasomi, known as “KuroKy,” has won $4.2 million since starting his career in 2010. DOTA 2 is another multiplayer online battle arena video game.
The Fortnite World Championship is seen as a major event in e-sports, which is estimated to be a billion-dollar industry in 2019. According to Epic Games, Fortnite has currently 250 Million registered players. In the world cup, about 40 million players participated.
